How to get featured on the Twin Cities Collective Instagram Account (Rules & Tips!)

Did you know that you can be featured on the TCC account? Since the first day the account has existed, we’ve featured and curated many photos. However, not every photo will fit the TCC aesthetic/strict rules I’ve created for feature. Here’s some tips to getting selected!

  1. NO FACES (EXCEPT PODCAST OR EVENT)

I won’t select a photo that has a direct face. The only time you see them on our account is if it’s one of our own photos from an event or from the podcast. Some examples of

These are examples of partial faces. Back of the head works also

Why do I do this? I like to keep an “anonymous” feeling to TCC.

2. WHITE WITH BLACK TEXT AT LEAST EVERY 9 PICTURES

The only time I put non-TCC graphics (posts with text & not pictures) is when there is a white background. That’s the best look on instagram IMO. I usually do ones with black text.

3. VARY INSIDE & OUTSIDE SHOTS

| usually vary the shots so that the photo next to it doesn’t have the same look. I tend to have favorite types of shots (indoor, outdoor, text, close up, etc…) that I repeat.

4. PLACEMENT WITH SURROUNDING PICTURES IS EVERYTHING

For me, this is a huge factor. If the photo next to it doesn’t work, I may wait a few days before posting one of the pictures I like.

5. KEEP COLORS CONSISTENT

Going along with the previous two, I need consistency. I tend to be seasonal with photos, so winter has darker colors, spring pastels, etc…

6. NOT TOO MUCH TEXT-VERY LIMITED ON PODCAST, GRAPHICS & LETTERBOARD QUOTES (TEXT ON PHOTOS DOESN’T DO WELL AT ALL)

I usually don’t select photos that have text on top. If there is text, it’s on a white backdrop or on a letterboard. They just look/do better

7. MAKE SURE TO PICK A GOOD THUMBNAIL FOR VIDEO

Most of the time I don’t select videos, this is more of a rule for myself, always make sure the video has a good thumbnail

8. DO NOT ADD WATERMARKS

I never select photos with watermarks. Instagram photos should always be correctly credited, but I think adding watermarks takes away from the photo (unless it’s a stock photo to be purchased).

9. CONSISTENT HASHTAG USE (#TWINCITIESCOLLECTIVE)

I use the hashtag #twincitiescollective exclusively for photos featured on TCC account. So make sure to add it to your account!

10. ONLY GREAT PHOTOGRAPHY

If the photo is too dark, poorly composed, or just not the right colors for the account, it won’t be selected. Make sure to edit the photo & get good lighting. It 100% can be taken on a phone, but it does have to have good
